Former Young Actress Mia Wasikowska Finds Fame

Never mind happy anonymity. That’s so last week. This week Mia Wasikowska is a full-fledged star, or at least the star of the latest box office record-breaker.

Wasikowska is Alice. Yes, the Alice of director Tim Burton’s expectedly oddball retelling of “Alice in Wonderland.” In this adventure, Alice falls down the rabbit hole 10 years later at age 19 and, along with the White Rabbit and Blue Caterpillar, runs smack into the Mad Hatter in the form of a hilariously made up Johnny Depp.

Wasikowska, of course, isn’t a complete unknown. She won notice as the troubled teen gymnast in HBO’s critically acclaimed series “In Treatment.” Mostly, though, she was just a former ballerina with two episodes of an Australian soap opera and a couple movies (“Defiance,” “Amelia”) under her belt when she sent off an audition tape in February 2008.
