Not Child’s Play: Closely Watched Train Hoppers

Kevin, a 14-year-old Honduran boy, likes to play on the hulking Mexican freight cars he has chosen to ride on a journey to the United States. He hangs off the sides of moving boxcars. And to heighten the fun, he jumps down when the train slows and trots alongside, waiting until the very last car to grab on, barely, and pull himself up the side again.

At one point during “Which Way Home,” a documentary about child migrants that has its television premiere on HBO on Monday, Kevin and several other young traveling companions stand on the freight car roof where they have been riding, laughing and waving their arms like birds. “I’m flying with my friends,” one boy says with a grin.
