New Mexico to Change Labor Laws

Starting in July, New Mexico will regulate child entertainment.  Tell us what you think.

I don't think the laws are strong enough, but it certainly is a great place to start.  All right to work states should adopt these laws and more.  Children are taken advantage of, throughout this industry.  It is time all States stepped up to the plate to protect our children.

Congratulations to New Mexico for taking a stand.

I agree that the child labor laws are not strong enough. What can we do, as studio teachers to nationalize the child labor laws as they are in California ? I've been bringing this up to the Screen Actors Guild here in S.F., but they don't even have a Young Performers Division anymore here.

    HI Bonnie,

I agree as well.  If we could have national rules that would not only provide better protection for child actors across America, it would simpify enforcement of the rules.

Currently there ae MANY states that defer to the federal government fo rules for child performers. Unfortunately our federal govt. provides an exemption from the child labor
provisions for ``any child employed as an actor or performer in motion pictures or theatrical productions, or in radio or television productions.''   As we build membership here at ChildrenInFilm.com, hopefully we can join forces with other groups (SAG, IATSE, etc.) to create a voice for change.  I know Paul Petersen has been working on this campaign this for years without much success.
